About the Artist:
Gerd Schmidt was born in 1963 in East Germany, where Russian ideology and a suppression of individuality shaped everyday life. This environment deeply influenced his youth and early adulthood. At 23, he entered the military to complete mandatory service, then spent six years earning degrees in tool making and construction at a technical college.
In 2004, Gerd moved to the United States, where he discovered a new sense of spirituality and creativity. He began expressing his newfound romanticism through painting, developing a signature style centered on birch tree landscapes.
His self-taught techniques blend color and texture in a distinctive way, often incorporating organic materials like gold and silver leaf mica flakes to enhance the natural feel of his work.
Gerd lives with his wife in a woodland home in Michigan, surrounded by the landscapes that inspire his art. His work was featured in ArtPrize (2018) and the Our Town Art Exhibit & Sale in Birmingham, Michigan (2019).
