The Importance of Glass in Custom Framing
Share

When most people think about custom framing, they focus on the frame and the mat - and those are important. But one of the most critical elements for protecting and showcasing your artwork is glazing: the glass or acrylic material that sits between the art and the world.
Whether you’re framing a watercolor, family photo, needlework, jersey, military jacket, wedding flowers or a treasured print, glazing isn’t just a finishing touch; it’s a form of long-term preservation.
Protection You Can’t See, But That Makes All the Difference
The most effective way to preserve artwork and objects of historical or sentimental significance is to store them in a sealed archival box, in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment, completely protected from light.
Of course, while this offers ideal preservation, it doesn’t allow you to enjoy the piece. Instead, our goal is to balance protection and presentation - preserving your artwork as carefully as possible while still allowing it to be beautifully displayed.
Glazing is the easiest way to prevent damage caused by environmental factors such as UV light, dust, and airborne pollutants that can fade, discolor, or deteriorate artwork over time.
Good glazing protects more than just the surface. It protects your memories.
Choosing the Right Glazing: Performance Meets Clarity
Not all glass is the same. That’s why we pair your artwork with specific glazing solutions depending on your needs - from maximum protection to reduced reflection. Here are options we commonly use:
- Museum Glass (most commonly used): This premium glass offers 99% UV protection with virtually perfect clarity. It is ideal for valuable or light-sensitive art, jerseys, shadowboxes and more. Investment: $$$
- Conservation Clear Glass (2nd most common): A conservation-grade 99% UV protection option that combines clarity and protection at a more accessible price point. Investment: $
- Conservation Reflection Control Glass: This glass goes beyond 99% UV protection by softening glare, making your art easier to view from all angles in bright spaces. Not recommended on triple+ mats or shadowboxes. Investment: $$
- Optium® Museum Acrylic: A lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass, perfect for large or delicate pieces where weight matters. Offers perfect clarity, abrasion and static resistance, and 99% UV protection. Investment: $$$$
- Conservation Clear Acrylic: A great all-around acrylic choice with 99% UV blocking and shatter resistance. Especially useful for items that need both protection and durability. Investment: $$
Each choice balances clarity, protection, and style. Don't worry - we’ll help you decide which one fits your artwork and display environment best.
