Framing a Piece of Mackinac Island History: The Grand Hotel Geranium Carpet

Grand Hotel geranium carpet square mounted and framed at Main Street Art.

A few weeks ago, we got a call from a Mackinac Island resident with a very unusual request: custom framing a piece of the Grand Hotel's carpet.

Thinking we may have misheard, we gave our usual reply to curious framing inquiries: “Sure, we’ll take a look at it.” We weren’t expecting to frame a nearly 5-foot by 5-foot square of one of the most iconic designs on the Island!

The Carpet’s Origin Story

This isn’t just any carpet—it’s a piece of the Grand Hotel’s famed geranium-patterned carpet from the Parlor, a room known for its colorful, maximalist charm. Originally designed in 1979 by the legendary Dorothy Draper & Company and Carleton Varney, the Parlor’s carpet became instantly recognizable to generations of hotel guests.

This spring, the Grand Hotel gave its Parlor a fresh new look, once again collaborating with Dorothy Draper & Company. As part of the renovation, sections of the retired carpet were carefully cut into 4'x4' (closer to 5'x5') squares to be auctioned, raffled off, and eventually sold through the hotel’s website. Our client was lucky enough to secure one—and wanted it preserved in a big, bold way.

Framing a Carpet (Yes, Really!)

Framing a rug isn’t quite like framing a print or photograph - the design work is the same, but behind the scenes there were many challenges. Before anything could be assembled, we cleaned and trimmed the carpet, then mounted it securely—no small feat given its size and texture.

For this project, we selected a sleek black frame paired with a gold fillet to complement the vibrant reds and greens of the geranium design.  Once prepped, the rest came together beautifully. That said, it still takes two people to move the finished piece!

Preserving What Matters

We love working on meaningful projects like this—whether it's a piece of Mackinac Island history, a family heirloom, or a quirky find you just love. Custom framing transforms objects into lasting treasures.
